MERC Tutorting

Our Approach

McCully’s Educational Resource Center has built its tutoring reputation using student focused, scientifically based and researched instructional methods, coupled with more than 20 years of experience of tutoring thousands of students. Individualized instruction is aligned with the current classroom instructional expectations for each child, whether he or she is attending a private, public, charter school, or is being home schooled. At McCully’s Educational Resource Center, we also place the highest value on the parent’s input when designing the program for each child.

Our approach is to begin instruction at levels that will ensure success, blending current school assignments with areas requiring academic support. This approach closes the learning gap while maintaining current instructional needs. Every MERC tutor is a certified teacher and trained extensively in the most effective teaching methods. Our experienced tutors are passionate about helping your child raise his or her level of confidence, academic performance and grades achieved at school. The tutoring appointments are consistent, with the same teacher, at the same time each week.

Getting Started

The process begins with a consultation with the parent to understand specific student’s academic needs.

High school students, college students or adults needing tutoring in specific subject areas may be able to schedule almost immediately with one of our teachers who specializes in the subject area. Tutoring sessions can usually be scheduled within a day or two with a teacher.

Students in kindergarten through eighth grade start with an initial evaluation* to help identify areas that need instructional support.

(* This initial evaluation is a part of the registration process and is free with the registration of the student.)

Academic Evaluation

An analysis of a student’s strengths and weaknesses provides information for prescriptive instruction, and helps pinpoint what the child needs for improved academic performance. Evaluations are completed in the areas of reading, writing or mathematics to identify the skills that need support. These sessions with the child range from 45 minutes to an hour and a half.

Test results are analyzed to gain a thorough understanding of your child’s academic needs. Each child produces a unique testing profile and we use our expertise to define and refine the best instructional program for your child. Using this analysis, we develop a prescriptive learning plan specific to your child’s academic needs. The individualized program is discussed with you during the conference time. Parent input is necessary to ensure we are meeting the specific needs of your child. Together, we develop a tutoring schedule and plan that meets your child’s needs. Most conferences take 1 to 1.5 hours to complete.

School Program Alignment

An essential step of the process is working together with your child’s teacher. With your permission, we will email, call, or visit with your child’s teachers or guidance counselors. Input and information about your child’s progress and suggested areas of academic support are included in your child’s tutorial learning plan. This process ensures that we will align our tutoring with the classroom instruction.

Tutoring

Our custom designed facility offers individual classrooms for a quiet and focused work environment. Our Center is a state of the art learning center designed to maximize each student’s learning experience. Your child is scheduled to see the same teacher, same day, same time, and in the same classroom, with a consistently scheduled appointment. Our professional tutors will work one-on-one or in a small group of 2 3 students to review subject material, prep for tests, and help achieve the best grades possible on quizzes, tests, writing assignments, projects and report cards. If an adjustment to the scheduled appointment needs to be made, we will do our best to work out an alternate time with the same teacher.
